The eighty percent rule

Your gauge is not broken. It is doing what it is supposed to do.

A propane tank is never filled past 80 percent. The space above the liquid is there because propane expands when it warms up, and it has to have somewhere to go. That is written into code, it is not one company's policy, and every supplier in Washington fills to the same line.

Which means the number on your dial is not a fraction of the tank. It is a fraction of a tank that was only ever 80 percent full. A 500 gallon tank showing 30 percent is not missing 350 gallons. It needs about 250.

Most people have never been told this, because most people have never been shown their own arithmetic before they were quoted a price.

Read your last invoice

Propane is one line on your bill. What are the others?

Pull out your last delivery invoice and read down it. If there is more on it than propane and tax, here is what those lines usually are.

  • Delivery fee

    A charge for bringing the propane to you. The propane is not much use in the truck.

  • Hazmat fee

    A charge for handling propane safely. Handling propane safely is the job.

  • Fuel surcharge

    A charge for the diesel the truck burns getting to you, on top of the delivery fee for the truck getting to you.

  • Tank rent

    A monthly or annual charge for the tank in your own garden.

  • Minimum usage fee

    A charge for not using enough propane.

None of that is unusual and none of it is hidden. It is printed right there on the invoice. It is just that nobody ever sat down and explained it to you.
